Your
cat needs a clean litter box available to him at all times. This
box should be kept in a private area, such as a bathroom
or mudroom, out of the way of traffic and commotion in
your house. Respect your cat's need for privacy.
There
are many different styles of litter boxes - open pans,
covered, automatic cleaning, hide-a-ways, etc. You
should visit your local pet store to find the one that
is right for you and your home. If you have multiple
cats, you should have multiple boxes. I have three
cats and we only use one pan, which is fine. However,
I live in a one- bedroom apartment. Someone with
multiple cats who lives in a two-story house may choose
to put a box on each floor.
Exquisicat
Large Litter Box Starter Kit
Price: $9.99
at Petsmart
This is an example of your basic litter box pan. You
need to get a scoop, and litter pan liners (similar
to trash bags in a trash can) are also a great option. If
you don't get liners, you will need to clean out your
litter pan everytime you change out the whole box (needed
every 1-2 weeks, depending on how many cats you have)
with Lysol or something similar (avoid lemon scents,
which irritate cats and may result in him avoiding
the box). |

Kitty
Komplete Covered Litter Pan by Stylette
Price: $21.99
at Petsmart
This
is one example of a covered litter box. It
gives your cat some privacy while providing a vent
at the top to let odors escape. Many of these
covered boxes allow you to take off the top if
your cat doesn't like it, which will save you money. Another
great investment is the floormat pictured here
- it will grab some of the litter your cat brings
out with him so doesn't end up all over your house. |

Booda
Dome Covered Litter Box
Price: $19.99 at Petsmart
This
is another example of a covered box, except with
a more stylish look. This design features
a deep pan and a rounded design so that odors can't
get trapped in seams or corners. Basically
this one is the same as the one above, except for
the fancy design. It's all based on personal
preference. |

is an example of a newer variety of litter boxes
- those that are disguised. While it provides
your cat a place to relieve himself, it also gives
him a surface to lay and scratch on. This
particular model, made of wood and carpet, is lined
with easy-clean Melamine to resist stains and to
repel odors. you lift off the lid to clean
out the box. There are many other varieties
